Understanding Your Timber Building

What are the natural characteristics of the timber used in your log cabins and garden buildings?

As a natural product, the timber used in our log cabins and other buildings comes with unique properties. These can include natural colour differences, warping, twisting, shakes (cracks), splits, knots, knot holes, and varying surface finishes. These are all part of the inherent charm and natural properties of externally used timber and cannot be guaranteed against. While sometimes deep cracks may appear, our designs account for these natural occurrences. Minor on-site adjustments may occasionally be needed due to timber's natural characteristics.

Can the cabin or studio be used all year round?

Yes! With insulated walls, ceiling and floors, your Aspen studio and thick log walls combined with floor and roof insulation in our log cabins, these buildings are designed to be comfortable in every season. Optional extras such as underfloor heating and hot/cold Air con units can be installed to make your space even more cosy!

Do I need planning permission for a cabin or studio?

In most cases, our cabin or studios fall under permitted development rights, meaning you won’t need planning permission. However, rules vary depending on your location and the size of your chosen studio. We recommend checking with your local planning authority for confirmation.

How does the unpredictable UK weather affect my timber building?

Timber, even after being cut, is still very much a living material, and its behaviour is greatly influenced by the weather—a frequently discussed topic in the UK! Come rain or shine, hot or cold, treated or untreated, timber will react in various ways. It's natural for timber to crack, warp, twist, split, as well as shrink and contract in dry conditions, and swell and expand in damp conditions. These are normal responses to environmental changes.

Essential Care & Maintenance

When and how should I treat my log cabin to ensure its longevity?

To maintain the longevity of your product, it is imperative that you treat any bare timber as soon as reasonably possible after fitting. If your product is untreated, this means treating both the internal as well as external surfaces. If your product is pre-treated, applying a high-quality water repellent can further reduce the amount of splitting caused by weather exposure.

What should I do if sap appears on the wood?

Sap is naturally formed by trees, and occasionally, you may see it emerge from the wood. This is a completely natural occurrence. You can often remove sap using soapy water, or your local DIY shop will likely stock specialist products designed for sap removal.

Log Cabin Specifics & Modifications

Are there special considerations for log cabins used with hot tubs inside?

Yes, log cabins intended to house hot tubs must be exceptionally well-ventilated. It is essential to install a fan large enough to effectively remove humidity and moisture, preventing condensation and potential damage to the timber structure.

What kind of base is essential for my log cabin or timber building?

A crucial requirement for all our log cabins and timber buildings is a square, level, and plumb base. This means ensuring there are no run-offs or unevenness, and that the base is nice and sturdy, capable of fully supporting the weight of your product. For concrete bases, we recommend exact dimensions to direct rain away from bearers.

Can I cover the floorboards of my log cabin with other flooring?

Some customers like to modify their product by covering the floor. However, we strongly recommend that you check with your chosen floor covering supplier to ensure it is suitable to fit over the top of spruce floorboards. Failing to do so could potentially lead to issues such as rotting floorboards due to trapped moisture.

What ongoing maintenance will my log cabin require?

Regardless of who installs your log cabin, some ongoing maintenance is typically required. This includes periodically repacking windows and doors, adjusting storm braces, and tapping down logs to ensure a tight fit. You should also regularly ventilate your log cabin to prevent moisture build-up. It's also recommended to regularly clear the roof of any debris to avoid water pooling, especially on flat or low-pitch roofs.

Can I fix items to the internal walls of my log cabin?

We recommend that if you intend to fix items to the walls of your log cabin, you do not attach them over several wall logs. Doing so can restrict the natural expansion and contraction of the timber, which could lead to gaps or structural stress.

What are the cladding options?

You can choose between 22mm Redwood Log Lap Cladding or Premium Cedar cladding. Both are durable and stylish, with Cedar offering a naturally rich colour and exceptional durability due to natural oils that resist decay, rot, and insects. Redwood is a versatile and reliable softwood that is prized for its strength and durability, and attractive appearance.

What optional extras can I choose?

We offer a wide range of extras, including Aqua Protect laminate flooring, additional windows, canopies, guttering and paint finishes. We offer a full service including laying the perfect base for your building to sit on. We can also arrange for full electric installation in your building.

Composite decking verandas and steps can also be installed by our team to give you that polished final look!

How long does installation take?

Most studios and cabins can be installed within 2-5 days, depending on size and optional extras. We will give you a clear schedule before starting work.

How much space do I need around the cabin or studio?

We recommend leaving at least 1m of clearance around your studio or cabin. This allows for air circulation, access for maintenance (such as treating or painting the timber), and ensured rainwater can run off freely.
